Chapter Fifteen

What was it with men and their horrible timing?

Allie would have given anything in the world for Van to have said something like that over the course of the previous twelve months. She would have appreciated a simple wink, an occasional hello, or even an unexpected smile. What had she gotten before the world ended? Nothing more than an odd nod of acknowledgment, and that had even looked forced.

Van hadn’t been what anyone would have considered friendly prior to their hallway encounter just the other day, but he was slowly showing his true self the more time they spent together in their fight for each mile. There was a lot more to him than what she’d read in the newspapers, that much was obvious to the most casual observer. This team of men that comprised his family seemed unique, and his drive to reach them proved his supreme loyalty. He was also compassionate with others, no matter how much he tried to hide that fact. As for his latest admission about how he thought of her? It kindled a fire in a way that the warmth coming from the vents could never do…not that it mattered. Nothing mattered anymore but them making it to Lost Summit, Washington in one piece.

“What is that right there?” Van asked, breaking Allie’s train of thought as he pointed toward the map still sprawled over her legs. She shifted so that her feet were back on the floor of the car, lifting the map for a closer look. “The area right below Madison.”

“It’s a ski resort.” Allie automatically reached for the cell phone that she’d set in the console before realizing it was no longer of any use to them. She hadn’t been able to obtain a signal since last night. “It doesn’t have a name on this map, just a symbol on the legend that designates it’s a ski recreation area, but it seems to span a fairly large area. Why?”

Allie couldn’t picture Van giving up before they’d even reached the hard part of the trip. It wasn’t in his nature. He obviously had to have something in mind, but she couldn’t fathom what that might be. She was still thinking about the train. How hard would it be to make one of those suckers run in this shit?

“They would have some sort of snow groomer there,” Van shared, unable to go around the current pileup of traffic. He remained composed and didn’t even sigh in frustration. Allie was ready to start pulling her hair out. The Bronco they were driving afforded them the luxury of limited off-road mobility; however, the shoulders dropped off precipitously. It left them at the mercy of the other drivers. “You know, the vehicles that have the winter tracks that would enable us to travel in even the deepest ash.”

“You mean large tires with chains?” Allie asked, not sure where he was going with this. “Those trucks still have engines that will require clean air filters.”

“Think of a tank in the military—tracks.
